to supplement or not to supplement…

People often ask me why supplementation is important and if you eat a healthy, well balanced diet, is it even necessary? The simple answer is YES, supplementation is very important. Why, you ask?

1. Only 2% of Americans get the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.

2. 38% decline of nutrient content of garden crops during the past 50 years.

3. 90% of Americans are lacking key nutrients in their diets.

4. Hectic work and family schedules make it tough to eat right.

5. Stress, aging, and, pregnancy increase your bodies need for nutrients.

6. Extremely difficult to get all the nutrients you need in the right amounts.

7. Proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can prevent 60 – 90% of disease.

While taking your vitamins is very important it is also important to make sure that you are taking a high quality brand that actually works. Don’t waste your money on a cheap tub of synthetic vitamins from costco. Invest in a good brand that provides clinical studies and avoid brands with artificial sweeteners, flavors, or preservatives. Look for a company that focuses on safety and purity!

Scientific studies recommend the following on  a daily basis: Multi vitamin, vitamin C, calcium, antioxidants, fish oil, vitamin D, Vitamin E, probiotics, B vitamins, and Lutein and Lycopene.

Exhausted just looking at this list?

Well it is your lucky day you can get all of these nutrients in ONE convenient daily strip:

Do you get in your 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies a day?

There is nothing like attending an inspiring event where you learn a lot and take away a plan of action for yourself too. This past weekend I attended a seminar through Shaklee that was focused around women’s health and I came out wondering if I get the recommended 5 – 9 servings of fruits and vegetables in everyday. You might think that as a holistic nutrition counselor all I eat is Kale, but that is not exactly the case. Even  nutrition counselors need a kick in the butt once in a while. Leaving the event I decided that I was going to challenge myself to get something green in at every single meal from here on out. So far, so good! Breakfast seems to be the most difficult, but even on Sunday when I was craving something brunchy and not my usual green smoothie I made it work with a Kale omelette using one egg, Kale, red onion, eggplant and fresh mozzarella cheese. Greens are not only full of essential vitamins and minerals, but they are also full of fiber that will fill you up and make you less likely to eat junk.  Loading up on greens is a great way to stay healthy and also drops some lbs. Double Bonus! Do you get in your 6 – 9 servings of vegetables a  day?

Giveaway: Brad’s Organic Whole Wheat Pasta!

Who doesn’t love pasta? The question that it seems everyone wants to know is if pasta is good or bad for you. Many people think that cutting carbs is THE trick to losing weight and  pasta is one of the first things to go when carbs are cut from a diet. I can tell you first hand that too much pasta will make you gain weight, but the reality is that too much of just about anything will make you gain weight and cutting any major nutrient from your diet is never a good idea. When it comes to eating pasta it is all about moderation and picking the right brand!

Picking the right brand of pasta is the same as picking just about anything you buy in the grocery store; it is all about reading labels. When looking for a good pasta I always look for a whole wheat pasta made of 100% whole wheat. 100% whole wheat should be the first ingredient listed. I recently came across Brad’s Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti. The ingredients are: 100% organic Durum Whole Wheat Flour. (This means the whole grain has been ground into a flour. Durum is a type of wheat.) Simple and to the point, so I decided to give it a try. This is now my go to brand of pasta! It is delicious and a lot healthier than many of the other whole wheat pasta’s I have seen. I have also tried their Penne Pasta which is equally delicious.

Now for the giveaway! Brad’s Organic is offering a fabulous giveaway to ONE fabulous reader. The giveaway package includes: Whole Wheat Linguine, Whole Wheat Farfalle, and Rotini. If you are one of those non-believers in whole wheat pasta give this brand a try, it is truly delicious. Brad’s Organic sells many other products besides Pasta and I have slowly been trying many of them. I recently bought their creamy peanut butter which is also seriously good! You can order Brad’s Organic products directly from the website and they have a flat rate shipping fee of $5.95.

Best Rice Cooker Ever – “Kamado San”

I make rice quite often and  I have wanted a rice cooker for a while now to make cooking it easier. when I make it on the stove top in a regular pan it always seems to come out burnt, not cooked enough, or super dry. There are so many rice cookers out there it is hard to know what to buy.  My parents bought a rice cooker when they were in Japan some years back: the “Kamado-San”. Doesn’t the name alone sound bad-ass?

I have tasted rice out of this traditional Donabe cooking pot several times at my parents house and it always seems to come out just right. This is no ordinary rice cooker; these ceramic pieces of art are crafted in Japan, using clay from the Iga region and they take about two weeks to make.  For a while I thought it was mamas cooking skillz that made the rice taste so delicious, but I soon realized it was the Kamado-San.  No Offense Mom. You still got skillz! The last thing i want to do is piss off my most loyal reader.

Well, after about a year of trying to track down the Kamado-San I received one from my parents for my birthday this past June and it is all I was hoping it would be and more. It is so easy to make rice and it is nearly impossible to screw it up. I know there are many rice cooker options out there and most are a lot cheaper than this one, but it is well worth the extra money.  You can buy it on a website called Toiro Kitchen for $155.

“It Was Worth Every Bite” A diary of a year in Rome

I believe that I am who I am today because of the year I spent after college living and working in Italy. I moved to Rome with my best friend Austin and we spent an entire year eating pizza and pasta, smoking cigs, working, falling in love, and drinking like sailors. We even attempted the cabbage soup diet, not once, but twice.  My path towards the new healthy me started four years ago, when I returned home after a year in Rome and realized how unhealthy I had become. It has been a four year battle since returning home to get where I am today and I am still not perfect. Austin has spent the past four years writing a fantastic, hilarious, and sad (at times) book about our journey in Italy. This book is a great read for just about anyone who has spent time abroad, plans to spend time abroad, knows someone who is going abroad, or who has simply experienced life somewhere that is new and unfamiliar to them. You can buy a copy of  “It Was Worth Every Bite” by Austin Gray Fremont on blurb.com.

It is a great read, and you can get a nice little glimpse into my not so healthy past-self.

Diet pills and other quick fixes

I was early for my spin class this morning so I decided to pop into CVS to browse around. There is something about drug stores and time-wasting that just go so well together. The hard part is leaving without purchasing something you really don’t need, like a gossip magazine or an extra-large snickers bar. As I was browsing the aisles this morning I got held up in complete and total repulsion in the “weight loss” aisle. It is astonishing how many bogus products are  out there tricking the public into thinking if you just drink a shake or pop a pill you will be able to achieve your weight loss dreams. When I was in high school a bunch of my friends were trying a typical weight loss pill, I believe it was Zantrex, and I tried it once or twice to see what it was all about. I don’t think I have ever felt worse in my entire life: my heart was beating out of my chest and I had a massive headache. Maybe the point is to make you feel so ill that you don’t want to eat? If that is the point then I have to say it definitely works. My question is this: Why on earth would someone choose to feel like they are dying in order to NOT eat? , when they could just as easily enjoy fresh and delicious food while also losing weight and feeling great? Is it because people don’t know where to turn? they are lazy and want a quick fix? or is it because they are so damn confused about what is healthy and what isn’t? Maybe it is all of the above? I can’t say I haven’t fallen into these traps myself in the past, because I certainly have. I have certainly been that vulnerable person around January 1st looking for a way to get back on track and falling a sucker to the thousands of quick fix diets and supplements being advertised on TV.  Nutri-System even got to me once: I thought it looked easy enough and that once I did it and lost a good amount of weight at least I’d feel in control. Once it arrived I opened the package, took one look at the fake food inside, and sent it straight back to where it came from. It is no secret that any “food” that does not have to be refrigerated and never goes bad, is probably not real food.  I think that is around the time that I promised myself it was time to get healthy for real, by eating real food and doing real exercise. It is really difficult for us to not fall into these unhealthy weight loss traps with all the in your face advertising out there, not to mention the aisle full of scam products in just about every drug store. I guess this post is kind of a rant, but my point is that losing weight doesn’t have to be so difficult and unhealthy, but that it should be the exact opposite.

Sports Bras for big Ta’s

My entire life I have struggled to find the perfect sports bra. I even went through a period when I was determined to create the perfect sports bra, because I was sick of doubling up on crappy sports bras. Yes, by doubling up I mean wearing two to create twice the support. I am positive that all you other big busted ladies have had the misfortune of  resorting to this madness as well. I know there are many women and men out there who will never understand this dilemma, so let me put it this way: It is like going for a run in flip-flops, playing basketball in soccer cleats, or swimming in a football uniform. It is just goddamn uncomfortable and wrong.

So after many years of living the big busted struggle I am proud to announce that I have found the perfect sports bra, actually my friend who has a rack that is also large and in charge turned me onto these amazing contraptions and neither of us have looked back since.  So for all you big chested ladies out there save yourself a lot of pain, anguish, and time and invest in a Shock Absorber sports bra. This is a British company and you can’t buy directly from their site, but I strongly recommend that you at least check out their hilarious and informative website. It walks you through which level of support you need based on your level of activity and it also shows a hysterical demonstration of bare boobies on the run with no support, which they call their “Bounce-ometer”. Once you have figured out which level bra is right for you, you can buy directly from a bunch of different U.S. websites. I normally buy them from Fresh Pair, but I have also noticed that you can buy them from Amazon and Bare Necessities. I wear the level 4 Max No Wire Bra and it has changed my workouts and my life dramatically. I know that seems extreme, but if  you have suffered from the big busted struggle you totally get what I mean.

Mix My Granola + 15% discount

I have looked for a healthy alternative to making my own granola for a while now. Granola is made from oats which are a whole grain. I find that eating whole grains in the morning is satisfying and keeps me full until lunchtime — there is nothing worse than your stomach growling an hour after breakfast.  Whole grains are full of fiber; making them slower to digest and thus keeping you full for longer periods of time.  Because it is difficult to find healthy granola in the supermarket, some people opt to make their own. Most granola bars and granola cereals found in the supermarket are filled with tons of unnecessary sugars making them no better than a box of Cocoa puffs.  A while back I saw a write-up in the New York Times about Mix My Granola, a company that lets you choose from many ingredients, customizing your own granola mix; sounds like a great alternative to making your own to me!

The first step is to choose your granola base, your choices are: Cinnamon granola, organic granola, low-fat granola, French vanilla granola, or 100% organic museli. Once you choose your base you can pick from many dried fruits, nuts, seeds, and even enhancers such as Acai powder, (which was my choice)! They also offer tons of unhealthy choices that are available to add to your mix, these are listed under the ‘extras’ tab. Steer clear of the candy and sugary options or you might as well just buy the store brand junk. Besides it being a hassle free alternative to making your own granola mix at home, I love that they give you the nutritional value of your mix at every step so you know exactly what will be going in your belly. They also give you detailed descriptions of all the ingredients in the different granola bases as well as the location where many of the dried fruits and nuts come from. How cool is that? I eat it for breakfast in the morning and also as a snack throughout the day. I am on their mailing list and just got an email about a promotion they are offering now for 15% off all granola orders over $25.00. The promotion code is HAPPY2010 and the order needs to be placed by midnight on Thursday January 7th. If you decide to place an order let me know what you put in your mix and how you like it.
